What Is a Credit History Report Request DataCrédito Colombia?

The Credit History Report Request DataCrédito Colombia is the formal exercise of the financial habeas data right recognized in Article 15 of the Constitución Política de Colombia and developed by Ley 1266 de 2008 — Statutory Law of Financial Habeas Data — and Ley 1581 de 2012 — General Law on Personal Data Protection. Through this request, any natural or legal person can access free of charge the totality of information that DataCrédito (operated by TransUnión Colombia S.A.S.) and CIFIN (operated by Experian Colombia S.A.) have on record about them — the two main credit registries in the country authorized by the Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia.

DataCrédito is Colombia's most comprehensive credit information system, with records of more than 30 million natural and legal persons, fed by information from banks, financial cooperatives, insurance companies, telecommunications companies, public service companies, and employee funds. CIFIN, operated by Experian Colombia S.A., is the second credit registry in the country and also compiles information from financial sector entities supervised by the Superintendencia Financiera. Both registries are authorized by the Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia as data operators under Article 22 of Ley 1266 de 2008.

The right to consult one's own credit history is free and unlimited. Ley 1266 de 2008 in Article 8 recognizes the information holder's right to know, update, rectify, and suppress the data that the credit registries have about them. DataCrédito allows free consultation through its digital platform MiDataCrédito.com, though it also accepts written requests. CIFIN allows consultation through its portal MiCIFIN.com. However, when digital platforms experience failures or the applicant needs the report in official written format to present before courts, the Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio, or a financial entity in a formal claim, a formal written request is the appropriate mechanism.

The credit history includes: holder's personal data, list of entities that have consulted the history, active and inactive obligations with balances, opening dates, payment dates, historical delinquency days, credit scores, and any special annotations. This information determines the holder's capacity to access new credits, rentals, employment (in some sectors), and contracts with the public sector. The Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio, as Colombia's data protection authority under Ley 1266 de 2008 and Ley 1581 de 2012, supervises DataCrédito and CIFIN to ensure compliance with the holder's rights.

When Do You Need a Credit History Report Request DataCrédito Colombia?

The formal credit history request to DataCrédito or CIFIN is necessary or advisable in the following situations.

Pre-credit verification: Before applying for a mortgage, vehicle credit, or credit card, knowing one's own credit report allows identifying and correcting errors that may affect approval. Many people are rejected due to erroneous reports that could have been corrected in advance.

Contesting negative reports: When a person suspects they have negative reports for already paid, prescribed, or never contracted obligations, the formal request for the report is the first step to identify the specific reports and exercise the correction right under Article 16 of Ley 1266 de 2008.

Identity fraud verification: In case of suspected identity fraud (impersonation to contract credits), the urgent request for the complete report allows identifying fraudulent obligations to report them to the Fiscalía General de la Nación and the involved financial entities.

Rental processes: Landlords in Colombia frequently consult the credit history of prospective tenants. Knowing one's own report before beginning a housing search allows anticipating possible rejections and correcting situations that may affect approval.

Employment processes in the financial sector: Financial entities, insurers, and some companies in the real economy consult the credit history of candidates for management or trust positions. The candidate has the right to know their report before the selection process and to contest any incorrect information under Article 10 of Ley 1266 de 2008.

Periodic monitoring: Financial advisors recommend consulting the credit history at least once a year as a financial hygiene practice, since errors in credit registries are frequent and their correction can take weeks.

What to Include in Your Credit History Report Request DataCrédito Colombia

The Credit History Report Request directed to DataCrédito or CIFIN must contain the following elements.

Holder identification: Full name, national ID number (cédula for natural persons or NIT for legal entities), date of issue of the identity document, and city of issue. These data must exactly match the credit registry records to guarantee that the report is issued for the correct person.

Type of report requested: Specification of whether the complete credit history report is requested including active and inactive obligations, payment history, third-party consultations, and credit score; or whether only specific information is requested such as the status of a specific obligation.

Consultation period: Indication of the period for which information is required: only active obligations, the last 4 years (maximum permanence period of negative information under Article 13 of Ley 1266 de 2008), or the entire available history.

Legal basis of the right: Express reference to Article 15 of the Constitución Política, Article 8 of Ley 1266 de 2008, and Article 8 of Ley 1581 de 2012, establishing the right of free access to one's own personal data.

Report delivery method: Request for the report to be delivered in physical form (at the office or by certified mail) or digital (email), with indication of the corresponding address.

Additional requests: If in addition to the report information is required on which entities have consulted the credit history in the last 6 months, or if correction of a specific identified data point is requested, include these additional requests with basis in Article 16 of Ley 1266 de 2008.

Signature and contact details: Handwritten signature of the holder or duly accredited attorney, with phone number and email for notification of the response. forms-legal.com provides this request model updated to the Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio regulations for 2025.
